Frequently Asked Questions:
What do AmeriCorps VISTA members do?
AmeriCorps VISTA members commit one year to serving full-time (~40 hours/week) at a community organization (non-profit, college/university, local government office, etc.) on anti-poverty projects. VISTA members focus on building the capacity of their organization through projects such as developing outreach and marketing campaigns, building a social media presence, creating databases, writing grants, managing first-year programs, and recruiting volunteers.
Who is eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA?
Applicants must be 18 years or older, pass a criminal history check, and have one of the following citizenship statuses: U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, Lawful Permanent Resident Alien, or a person legally residing in a state that has the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status.
What are the benefits of AmeriCorps VISTA?
During AmeriCorps VISTA service you will receive a modest living allowance. At the successful completion of your service term you also have the choice between receiving a Segal Education award ($6,095) or an end-of service cash stipend ($1,800). The education award can be put towards future higher education expenses or used to pay off student loans. VISTA members also receive one year of Federal Non-Competitive (NCE) hiring eligibility, which provides advantages in the federal hiring process. Finally, during your service you will have professional development training opportunities and gain daily leadership and project management experience.
Can I go to school or have a part-time job during service?
Yes, with supervisor approval, you may attend school or have a part-time job as long as it does not interfere with the responsibilities of your VISTA service.
Will AmeriCorps VISTA pay for my relocation?
If you move more than 50 miles from your home, you will be eligible to receive a relocation travel and settling-in allowance provided in your first paycheck.
When is the application deadline?
Yearlong VISTA positions with a June 8 start date, must apply by May 4, 2020. Positions with a July 6 start date must apply by June 3, 2020. The sooner your application is submitted, the more likely you will have an opportunity to interview before your desired position is filled.
